Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed this morning SB965, giving the City of Chicago new authority to use its extensive network of red light running cameras as speed cameras. The law becomes active on July 1, so motorists should be prepared.

This new law, authorities say, has always been for the protection of children and not about revenue. However, the same authorities argue that red light cameras also are only for safety, even while many studies have shown this is not the case. Such studies as a 2008 University of Florida study, or a 2007 Virginia Department of Transportation study that showed "the cameras were associated with an increase in total crashes... The aggregate EB results suggested that this increase was 29%... The cameras...

gasokie: a better solution: have more rigorous driving instruction standards. Everyone seems to know the rules but no one really does anymore. So, uniform driving school curricula for all new drivers, mandatory amount of hours and the culture will change.

Ya know, these devices if allowed to stay they will "train" the small percent of people who run red lights and speed and are responsible for so many unnecessary deaths on our streets..(Can you see the road rage in these posts?) to obey traffic laws and start behaving like adults on our streets and highways ... then I say bring it on.

If they (the speeders and light runners) continue their chosen and deliberate law-breaking ways then let them be the ones who pay more than their fair share of government financing. It is after all, a voluntary act to run a light or drive above the speed limit.

Finally: Speed devices and such free up officers for other duty. I recently read a letter to the editor which the writer lamented the fact a cop hidden behind a billboard or something pulled him over and wrote him a ticket for $190.00 bucks...When he got home a burglar had broken in, stole his goodies..His wide screen TV and guns and stuff...took forever to get the cops out to do anything...which wasn't much...after all most of them are tied up out on the road....bothering the motoring public. Just sayin''

Amen, jrsva. I find that many of the self-appointed nannies here are "Champion Authors". I guess between this stuff and one-word comments just to post something, we know how they became "champions".

On a slow day, I'm going to pick 5 articles and type in "blort" or "bazzinga" or something just to be a "Champion" too. Those comments are as relevant as anything else I've seen.

Counting down to this post being deleted now....10.....9......8.....

“What does this have to do with energy or gas prices?”

Why do you ask, Cakes? Do you think that somehow it is an inappropriate subject? Read the submission guidelines for news; it is very much on target.

If you are obeying the speed limit and all traffic laws then there should be no problem with *adding speed detection to red light cameras for "safety?"* Do Not give ‘them’ an excuse to stop, picture you and fine you and increase their city, county (parish, township, etc.), state or federal revenue.
More and more police vehicles are getting cameras that read license plates and match the plate number with DMV records to see if the vehicle is legal to be on the road – registration, insurance or stolen. Face recognition and video cameras in police vehicles and on the street to detect if that person is wanted by law enforcement. More and more digital instruments, on the street (with red light cameras too) and in police vehicles, to observe, detect and survey the population. Some cities have UAV’s in the air to monitor the population at large – general traffic, speeders and the chase, dense population centers and homes. UAV’s can stay in the air much longer than a helicopter can. Those UAV’s may be equipped with FLIR infrared thermal imaging sensors, night vision, radar and electronic devices to see through and into homes. Big Brother at large!
Governments can afford to spend tax dollars on this, the taxpayers will pay for it. Passenger vehicles will be a long time in coming with increased gadgets and improved technology, people do not want higher priced vehicles.
Produce and ‘drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Chicago/IL needs the money and lusts control. Isn't this the same ground that bred Rod Blagojevich and Barrack Hussein Obama?

Adding speed cameras won't stop anyone from going through a red light but you will notice more tickets in the mail.

They must think the average driver or person that reads
their silly articles is brain dead!! Of course it's to
raise more revenues... they can't get enough money directly
out of taxpayers they have to get it from them indirectly!
LA city council voted to have them taken out because of the
increases in accidents.

Blue Cruzer: "If you don't run red lights, you shouldn't have to worry."

In Los Angeles and in San Diego where they have red light cameras, the private company that runs the system shortened the time for the yellow light in order to get more violators. You will probably see the same thing happen in Illinois. It has nothing to do with safety. It is all about trying to get more ticket revenue.

frosty, it's because people will slam on the brakes to avoid going through an intersection with a camera, if there's a chance that the system thinks they were just a little too late for the green light.

Its BS, it's not about revenue. Let them give it to charity, you know they loose interest pushing it.
