Will Ryan Dempster make his scheduled start Friday night in St. Louis, or will he be skipped pending trade talks?

The Cubs need to assemble a better pitching staff. The first to go, unfortunately, is Jeff Samardzija, if there are takers.

Cubs pitchers surrender 9 runs at home to the Marlins this evening. That provides a reminder of the Cubs pitching staff debacle during the 2003 playoff series, only tonight there was no fan to make into a scapegoat.

Wow, Jeff Samardzija and Casey Coleman accounted for 16 runs allowed in a 17-1 loss to the Mets. Samardzija, losing four consecutive starts, and Coleman need to spend time in the minors.

TDice. i really wish that your prediction wouldv'e come true, but, just the opposite has happened. some of the pirate hitters have fattened up their batting averages on sorry cub pitching. it looks as if the cubs june swoon has already started. time to bring up anthony rizzo and start planning on who the cubs are going to offer up when the trade deadline comes up. wow. thanks for letting me vent.

The Cubs should find a way to cure their 9 game losing streak. Play the Bucs at PNC Park. If their pitchers can throw the ball across the plate, swings and misses happen...at a record pace!

Ask Starlin Castro what he hopes to improve this spring and the Cubs' All-Star shortstop doesn't hesitate:
"My defense,'' he says.
In less than two full seasons in the major leagues, defense has been the most glaring flaw for Castro. He hit .300 in a 463-at-bat rookie year and followed it up last season by batting .307 and leading the National League in hits (207).
He also led the NL in errors with 29. His two-year total of 56 is a big reason the Cubs have been the worst-fielding team in the majors over that two-year stretch, committing an MLB-high 260 errors in that span with fielding percentages that ranked 28th and last, respectively.
Defense has been a heavy focus of new manager Dale Sveum and his coaches this spring as they seek quick improvement in a team that went 71-91 to finish fifth place in the NL Central Division in 2011.
"That's probably the biggest obstacle of all,'' Sveum said. "Defense if everything, whether it's (pitchers' practice), pitching and catching the ball and throwing to the right bases and hitting cutoff men.''

For all the tough talk this winter about yanking players for not hustling, Cubs manager Dale Sveum didn't sound like he was in any rush to employ left fielder Alfonso Soriano as Exhibit A.
Soriano was the only Cubs player booed during the opening ceremonies at the Cubs Convention last month, possibly for posturing at the plate while a would-be home run stayed inside the park. How many times over the years have fans seen Soriano forced to stop at first or hustle his way into second after watching the flight of the ball?
Sveum knows Soriano's reputation well. But he pointed out that Soriano is not the only modern-day player who likes to watch what he believes is a home run.
Sveum's position on hustle is no pose

The Cubs and the Red Sox have agreed on a deal that settles their dispute over what Boston should get after Theo Epstein left for Chicago. The Cubs said Tuesday they are sending right-handed reliever Chris Carpenter and a player to be named to the Red Sox for a player to be named.
Epstein became Chicago's president of baseball operations and got a five-year, $18.5 million deal in October. The teams were not able to agree on compensation and submitted arguments to Commissioner Bud Selig. The 26-year-old Carpenter made 42 relief appearances between Double-A Tennessee, Triple-A Iowa and the Cubs. He spent four years in the minors before seeing his first major league action last season, when he posted no record and a 2.79 ERA in 10 appearances. Cubs send pitcher to Red Sox

Cubs expected to add Cuban outfielder Soler
The Cubs lost out on Yoenis Cespedes, but two other Cuban free agents may… (Jeff Bottari/Getty photo)February 13, 2012|By Dave van Dyck, Chicago Tribune reporterWhen the winter began, there were three major Cubans who could become free agents, and the Cubs appear to have landed two of them, although not the top-rated one.
The Cubs are expected to add 19-year-old outfielder Jorge Soler after acquiring 19-year-old pitcher Gerardo Concepcion, according to multiple reports from the Dominican Republic, where Soler is staying.
Soler, according to one report, will be making $27.5 million with the Cubs for three or four years. He may have been courted by Cubs ownership and front-office officials while they were visiting their new Dominican academy earlier this month.

I became a big Cubs fan right around the time Ryno was making it big in the north side. Around 1983, our cable company in Boston added WGN, among others, to our list of channels. As a huge baseball fan, it was a thrill for me to come home from school and turn on the tv and watch a day game. Wrigley was always packed, and they had some thrilling games against the Cards and Mets.
Then along came that magical summer of 1984. Ryno did it all (along with The Bull, Penguin, Buckner, Sutcliffe, etc). I always felt he could be a great leader in the clubhouse and dugout as well as on the field.
During that same time, I was best friends with someone who was also friends with these brothers, one was athletic, the other was a little on the geeky but smart side. We all played football in the middle of the street, basketball, and of course, stickball in the school parking lot.
Years later, I come to find out that the geeky brother went on to become the assistant GM for the San Diego Padres. "Is that the same Theo Epstein from grade school?!?" I wondered. It certainly was.
It was a dream job for him to GM the Sox for the past 9 years, and it was pretty cool to say that I knew him when he was growing up, always planning cross-patterns and curl routes on the sidewalk during our football games way back when.
Now that he's with the Cubs in a major capacity, I was hoping those two childhood roads would merge, and come full circle with a hiring of Ryno as manager. It's somewhat disappointing that he didn't get the opportunity, but classy of Theo to talk to him directly about the reasons why he will go another direction in his search.
Best of luck to both of them. After decades and generations of losing, I am happy to experience two titles. I hope Cubs fans can do the same in the very near future.

Im a huge Cubbies fan (which is difficult considering I live in Upstate NY), but I would have to say, as much as I love Ryno if I were him I would tell them what they could do with that managers job. He shouldve had it last year, I'm not saying he would've done a better job but he is a Cubbie through and through. I don't think he would come back now. I would love to see Tito Francona in there.
