BP station owners, customers, left high and dry in bankruptcy dispute

Eagle-Tribune -- METHUEN — For nearly a month, Sam Youssef, owner of the BP station on Lowell Street, hasn't sold a single drop of gasoline from his full-service station.

"I get 20, 30, 40 calls a day, asking, when am I going to reopen," said Youssef, who's owned the store for seven years. As he was talking to a reporter from The Eagle-Tribune this week, a woman drove up and asked if she could get gas, apparently not having seen the signs saying 'No Gas' and the orange cones blocking the pumps.

"I'm out of gas and I need full-service," she said, imploring Youssef to fill her tank or tell her where she could go for service.

"I don't have any gas," he answered politely. "Hopefully we'll have it next week. I don't know who else has full-serve pumps."

Not the station owners or BP's fault from what I see. Believe Getty Petroleum (and Getty Reality) were or are operating divisions of Luke Oil - a Russian oil conglomerate attempting to operate in the U.S. Guess it might be a 'failed international enterprise'.

I would not buy from a BP station. In Arizona, they are considered to sell trash gas. Also, the do not allow credit cards and charge a fee for using debit.

Not that I'm trying to defend BP, but for everyone who are quick to blast them, read the whole article. It is NOT BP that is at fault in this case.

Getty is in more places than New England. I went by a BP in Virginia last night and they had no Regular. I wonder now if it was a Getty Mart.

"A new company, Lehigh Gas, has apparently taken over as the distribution company. A representative of that company reportedly met with station owners in Boston on Tuesday, telling them that deliveries could start up May 1." Well today is May 1st. we'll see what happens.

Seems like there is a breech of contract here, with BP being unable to fulfill their part of the agreement. The station owner should be able to find restitution through legal channels, and at a minimum, be able to sell other brands of gasoline.

I agree. I remember reading an article years ago that many stations don't turn a profit on the gas. They make their money on the convenience store items - soda, cigarettes, etc. And at the end of the article on of the owners was wondering what's happening with his $60K deposit he made when he started the station. It's supposed to be in escrow earning interest, but will it get claimed by the creditors instead? I feel badly for these guys, and judging from their names I'm guessing many are immigrants trying to make it here.
