'Pay-as-you-drive' auto insurance could lower your rates

GasBuddy Blog -- If your auto insurance company really knew how safely you drive, they might be able to shave a few bucks off your current rates. That sort of wishful thinking is now becoming a reality for more drivers than you might think.

Usage-based auto insurance plans are not new; they've been around for a decade but really hadn't gained traction due to consumer concerns about insurance companies tracking their driving patterns like 'Big Brother'... But that's changing and pay-as-you-drive insurance plans are becoming more available and more widely accepted.

Business Week reports that Progressive, for instance, now allows anyone, regardless of their insurance carrier, to test its pay-as-you-drive option, called 'Snapshot', at no cost...

What a great idea. Help a huge profitable corporation track my movements. What could POSSIBLY go wrong with that. Sign me up yesterday. Hey, you want a detailed list of everywhere I went last week? I can do it, just say the word.

This would be good for responsible drivers. As more of them got their rates lowered by this program, the insurance companies would undoubtedly begin to raise rates for the non-pay-as-you-drive customers as this group would have a higher percentage of bad drivers.

Of course, having something like this installed would also serve to make drivers more aware of their driving habits, as they would effectively have someone looking over their shoulder all the time. For that reason, it might help to lower overall accident rates, making everyone safer, as the article mentioned.

Insurance companies aren't in business to save consumers money.

Ticobird is right. Why would insurance companies come up with something that would solely lower rates? It's a marketing tool, like all of the ads for satellite TV that promise an initial low rate, then jack it up after a period of time.

This idea has never appealed to me mainly because the insurance companies came up with it. You know they would have to stand more to gain than the consumer or they would not have developed the idea. Give me a break, I wasn't born yesterday. Today's informed consumer is basically skeptical due to decades of manipulation in conjunction with better news reporting. Anyway, look for insurance companies to push this model by charging more for conventional coverage while saying this proposed alternative results in lower rates. I hope the state insurance regulators are up to the task.

Used to drive more reckless before I started flying. Then realized that I could kill myself in seconds and fly as fast as I wanted to. Took the thrill out of driving crazy. That and getting old have slowed me down. Guess they would pay me to buy insurance!

Fine idea, but we've dropped Progressive because of its owner, Peter Lewis. He is a socialist and heavily supports those causes including the occupier in the Whitehouse.
