The distribution of votes tells the story. Rarely have I seen such an even distribution between the opinions. Basically saying no one knows. With a slight edge toward unlikely. I'm not sure if that's really an honest opinion or a Hopefully unlikely!!!

Out with Obummer and in with the thoroughly corrupt Mittens Romnoid. His Bain Capital will boost the price of gasoline to $10/gal while he says 'I don't care about poor people".

Although supply and demand has less affect on gas and oil that most commodities, a price of $5/gal, if it was reached this year would be short lived as the economy would tank after a few weeks at that price and the price would end up well below $3 by 2013. When politicians, oil companies, OPEC and all the others that have their hands in our pockets start to realize that oil/gas price stability controls the economy and that if they want a stable economy, prices have to rise slowly, then we may get an economic recovery. When the first thing that happens after the economy gets its first breath is to jack up oil/gas prices by 15-30% or more, we are going to have another short recovery and a deeper depression. To nearly double the price to $5, we will have a very deep depression.

Even with the election coming up, the price will skyrocket this year. If Obama is re-elected, $7 a gallon will be likely before he is done.

Probable especially since Obama refuses the Canadian pipeline project to increase North American oil production.

The peak price will be over $5 in at least 1/3 of the country. Cali will likely be $6 a gallon. Southern gulf states will be over $5 a gallon if the Iranians continue to saber rattle, and they actually start a war in order to drive up oil revenues.

I'm hoping the GasBuddy tweet from 21 hours ago is not a joke; stating "well perhaps in a twisted joke, there may not be a price hike in the Great Lakes for several days". Lets hope it's several months, now I'm dreaming.

I AM SURE IF BARAK OBAMA HAS HIS WAY, THE PRICE OF GAS WON'T STOP AT $5.00 PER GALLON.
HE WILL PROBABLY START UP SOME PROGRAM CALLED GAS ASSISTANCE FOR WELFARE RECIPIENTS, AND ILLEGAL ALIENS! WHOM PROBABLY ENJOY THE BENFITS OF OBAMA CARE AT NO COST.

Since oil prices hit an all-time high in The Netherlands (where I'm from) I decided to take a peek at the prices on the other side of the pond. Now I've gotten up from the floor and crawled back on my seat I can tell you; you are still lucky :P
The Netherlands always have had an aggressive policy against cars to encourage people to take public transport (which is rubbish²). That's why almost 60% of our gas prices are taxes, and at the current exchange rate our standard gas costs $6.74 a gallon. That's right, $6.74! And that's not even for premium gas!
It will probably be cheaper to ship my car to the US, fill it up and ship it back again :P
(edit typo)

The economy is heating up. As demand increases, the price will also. On the supply side, the nation needs to keep a steady supply of crude coming in, but pipelines and drilling are being stymied by government INaction, and there is always the Middle East cauldron to worry about.

With prices in the Philly metro area approaching $4 before the Summer... and the unknown status of what the world will or won't do re: Iran... More and more I think $5 is very possible (though the psychological barrier at $4... who knows.

If the enviro maniacs think that we should have 5.00 a gallon gas, then they should pay for it... That way the rest of us can drive around with our family and kids and enjoy life. Build the pipeline!

Well considering the CEO of Shell, stated to expect $5 per gallon this year, I think that it will be highly likely. I know that premium in California is already pushing the $4 mark, and regular is not far behind it. I think that before elections you will see it over $5. The price is going up an average of 2 to 3 cents every 4 days or so. I also think that once they get it to the $5 mark, they will all be happy. Great way to really screw up the economy even worse!!!!

The collapse of the EU is not significant? Certaintly an interesting take on things... Or the fact that China's and India's economies are ramping up. It does not have to be chaos alone to bring rise in oil prices. Devaluation of the US dollar will be a huge part as well. India and Iran are looking at trading gold for oil, and other countries are looking at leaving the US Dollar as the currency for which oil is traded. Once/if that happens there will be a dramatic increase in prices. There is quite a lot going on in the World right now, and once summer comes I think it will ramp up even further. Occupy Wall Street is probably going to turn violent like the Greek protests. That will put a whole other spin on things here at home.

Just looking at the historical price charts for the past six years on the webpage, it looks statistically improbable as there is nothing in the present world situation that would justify a significant run-up in oil prices.

Is probably a modest chance. Surely it will go to $4, but personally do not care as it is not a factor for me. Obama said it at least needs to be $7 a gallon to ween the US dependance, so I am sure that is where it will head through money printing by the Fed. Would say enjoy the change but he is slowly taking that away as well.

The original question has an error in it. If the average price is $3.46 that works out to $0.915 per liter in Canada. An American gallon holds 3.78L.
The average price in Montreal right now is already at $1.40/L which is $5.292 per gallon.
