Have to fall back to my 7 year old Thomas Guide on occasions, when Google Maps is wrong and Mapquest won't pull an address either.

On my latest trip to Ohio last month, I bought my first map in years. GPS's are great for mapping a course from point A to point B but nothing beats a paper map to get the big picture or to quickly see alternate routes that will take you past something you want to see. I don't care how big the screen is on your GPS, it just can't do that.

Can't always trust GPS. A trip a couple years ago took us through Nashville trying to get to Florida from Oklahoma!

I have a GPS and use it often, but I also keep paper maps as well. Especially on longer trips, the scale of a paper map helps.

All the new electronic devices are great until they take the long way, or to an underweight bridge or a covered bridge too low for the load or vehicle and a weight restriction that allows only a horse and buggy, one at a time. through the structure. Better have a map and Atlas with you then so you can get outta there!!!

although nice to look at, the paper maps were impossible to fold correctly, would always rip, the print was too small...what else can we pile on top of the mess we already have with these maps?

Paper maps, while good for nostalgia, suck when it comes to real use.

Give me a map any day. I enjoy using maps and seeing the whole picture. Although there have been times when I finally got to my destination area and couldn't find the place I was suppose to be at and wished I had a GPS.

There's nothing can beat reading a map in the car with an album playing on the skip-proof turntable mounted under the dash.

I used to love paper maps and still have a soft spot for them but... when gas stations started charging us so much for those maps, I did start looking for alternatives. I used to travel alot before the GPS or electronic maps and I've had at least at least 50+ maps with me at all times that started to cost $5 bucks each, which sucks now because they are worth less.
The best part of a paper map is being able to see the big picture with detail, with electronics the screen always reduces the details when looking for an overview and usually on a small screen.

I have a couple of GPS devices, and I use them often. I also have some paper maps which I use at times. The paper maps are a few years old now and some of them are no longer reliable in some areas. That will always be a problem with printed maps. My GPS's have recently been updated to the most current maps available, and they are very accurate. Those who have commented on the cost of GPS technology being expensive haven't looked at them lately. I just bought a very nice Garmin (factory refurb) for less than $100. That's with lifetime map updates AND free traffic info. And if you don't like a "snotty sounding" woman you can easily change the voice to a snotty sounding man, or even to one that's NOT snotty sounding. My GPS indeed HAS taken me off the desired course a couple of times, but overall it has saved me far more often than it has misled me.

The only way to see your whole trip is on a paper map. Google Maps is great for the details but there’s no substitute for a large map to get started with.
