Why You Shouldn't Rent A Car With A MasterCard

Forbes -- Hidden deep in the dark recesses of your credit card agreement, there may be perks beyond the much-heralded loyalty points emblazoned on its marketing materials. One such perk? Most credit card companies offer free insurance on rental cars. It’s one of the reasons your credit card can be a great travel companion and a great way to avoid forking over an extra 15 bucks every time you go on a trip.

Still, an average of 20% of all customers buy optional insurance from the rental company every time they drive a rental. Another 20% spring for it some of the time. Should you?

If you use a MasterCard, you might need to. Although MasterCard offers rental insurance to its Gold, Platinum, World and World elite class cardholders, some of the company’s cards come without the protection policy.

Most people think I'm a sap. BUT, if anything ever happened, I like knowing I would be covered (or hope I would be). I don't trust "credit card insurance" any more than "credit card free towing service" which is also supposedly included. Wait til you break down on a rainy night and see how this service is handled! (It isn't; you are invariably "out of the service area" which seems to include Minneapolis and parts of Bora Bora but nowhere in California...)

Tried dealing with them twice in the last 45-yrs., had problems with them both times and canceled both times! VISA has been my least problem with any credit card companies. Only have a VISA and Amer.Expr. now, all I need!
